Weeton Village

Protect Weeton – Say No to Industrial Solar Development

Weeton is a rural village in North Yorkshire, surrounded by some of the region’s finest agricultural and pastoral land.

For generations, our local authority has protected this
cherished landscape, recognizing its agricultural value and vital role in supporting biodiversity.

Yet today, this precious environment is under immediate threat.

A developer is proposing to build a massive industrial-scale solar farm, right in the heart of Weeton. 87 acres of productive farmland, within the protected Green Belt, are
set to be blanketed by rows of glass panels, battery storage units, a new substation, CCTV, security fencing, and access roads.

This is not renewable energy done right. This is industrialisation of our countryside

Renewable Energy – But Not at Any Cost

We support renewable energy.

But solutions must be smart, sensitive, and sustainable -not at the expense of rural communities, food production, and local ecosystems. Offshore wind farms and solar developments on brownfield sites near major infrastructure are examples of responsible energy generation. Building industrial solar farms on high-grade farmland in the heart of rural villages is not.

What is at risk?

  • Agricultural Land: The land is productive and classified as high-quality (Grade 3). Once lost to industrial development, it will be gone for a generation - or longer.

  • Landscape and Heritage: Weeton’s breathtaking landscape, visible from iconic locations like Almscliffe Crag and the Harewood Estate, will be permanently scarred.

  • Wildlife and Biodiversity: Hedgerows, veteran trees, and precious habitats will be placed under severe pressure, despite promises of ‘biodiversity enhancement

  • Community and Wellbeing: Increased traffic, construction disruption, security measures, and noise pollution will change the very fabric of Weeton village life.

The Developer’s Promises Don’t Stack Up

The developer claims the site will remain ‘agricultural’
with sheep grazing under solar panels—but experts and experience elsewhere show this is often impractical and unsustainable.

They also promise ‘temporary’ development for 40 years. Forty years is not temporary. For our community and our landscape, it is permanent.

We Must Act Now

The people of Weeton deserve better. We must protect our farmland, our heritage, and our rural way of life. We must insist that renewable energy projects are placed where they make sense, not where they devastate communities.

Together, we can stop this industrial solar farm.

Together, we can protect Weeton for future generations.
